Attic insulation in East Los Angeles CA - an attic insulated in the right order

Hot upstairs and a power bill that climbs every summer? We fix what's wrong up there, seal the gaps, then add insulation where it's thin.

What does attic insulation involve in East Los Angeles?

Attic insulation in East Los Angeles is a two-part job. We seal the gaps in your attic floor first and then add insulation on top, so the rooms below stay closer to the temperature you set and your cooling isn't fighting the heat coming through the ceiling.

Most calls start with a hot upstairs, a room over the garage nobody wants to sleep in, or a power bill that jumps every summer. The price turns on how big the attic is, how many inches are already up there and whether any of it is soaked or full of droppings, because that material has to come out through insulation removal before anything new goes in. The schedule turns on the same things, plus any repair that has to happen first, like a roof leak, so the estimate lays out what your attic needs and what has to come first before you decide anything.

How we handle attic insulation, in the order it should go

First we go up and look at what's already there, how deep it is, whether it's flattened, wet or full of droppings, and whether the vents along the edges are open. Anything that has to come first gets fixed or cleared out before we add a thing, because insulation laid over a leak or a mess only hides it. Then our crew does the air sealing, closing the gaps around the hatch, pipes, wires and light fixtures, since insulation can't do much against air pushing straight through a hole. New insulation goes over the old wherever the old is still in good shape, built up so the edges get as much as the middle, and we keep the vents along the eaves clear so air still moves through the attic. We clean up on the way out.

Most of what we add is blown-in insulation, loose fill blown through a hose, because it settles into corners and around framing where batts leave gaps. If the attic is only part of the problem, say cold floors over a crawl space or drafty rooms downstairs, our home insulation work looks at the whole house so you're not fixing one spot while the heat gets in somewhere else.

Seal the gaps and top up with loose fill

This is what most attics around here need, because the old insulation is usually still usable and just too thin or full of gaps. It costs less than foam, and once the gaps are sealed, loose fill blown over the top does the job well.

Spray foam when your ducts run through the attic

Foam costs more, but it seals air and insulates in one step, so it can earn its price when the ductwork sits up there in the heat. If your ducts are in the attic, I'll walk you through both options at the estimate and tell you which one I'd pick for your house.

Why homeowners call C&L East Los Angeles Insulation for attic work

I do every estimate myself

I come out for every estimate and look at the attic with you, so you hear the plan from the person who made it. A lead installer runs the crew on the job, and I look over the finished work with you at the end.

Hauling attics, then insulating them since 2017

Before this I ran a hauling business, clearing garages and attics around East Los Angeles, and kept pulling out insulation that was flattened, soaked or full of droppings. I learned the trade beside an experienced installer and opened this business in 2017.

Licensed and insured, and we clean up

We're licensed and insured. We protect the path to your attic hatch, haul off any old material that comes out, leave the house clean and tell you plainly what we did up there. Backed by our satisfaction guarantee.

We'll tell you if your attic is fine

If what's up there is in good shape and deep enough, I'll say so, because I'd rather lose a job than sell you one you don't need. To have me take a look, call (213) 329-0372 or send the form on this page.

Get a written plan for your attic, with the fixes listed first

Attic insulation in East Los Angeles, permits and what we find up there

East Los Angeles isn't its own city. It's an unincorporated part of LA County, so building permits for homes here come from LA County Public Works, through its East Los Angeles Building and Safety office at (323) 881-7030. Before anything else, we check which office covers your address. When a job calls for a permit, we take care of that step with them before work starts.

That check matters because cities next door, like Montebello and Monterey Park, run their own building departments. Across East Los Angeles and the cities around it, we see a lot of low, tight attics, rooms over the garage that bake in summer, and old insulation packed flat or fouled by rodents. The order of the work stays the same in every city we cover.

Questions homeowners ask about attic insulation

How do I know if my attic in East Los Angeles needs more insulation?

If the insulation is level with the floor joists or below them, so you can easily see the joists, it's time to add more. If it sits well above the joists, you probably have enough, and adding more may not be worth the money. I'll check the depth at the estimate and tell you which side your attic is on.

Does my old attic insulation have to come out before new insulation goes in?

Usually not, because new insulation can go right on top of the old. It has to come out when it's wet, moldy, smells bad or has animal droppings in it, since covering that leaves the problem in place. The new layer doesn't have to match the old, so loose fill can go over batts and batts over loose fill, as long as batts laid on loose fill have no paper or foil backing.

How much does attic insulation cost around Los Angeles?

Attic insulation installation in Los Angeles usually costs about $1 to $4 per square foot. That's the going rate for the area, not our quote, and where your attic lands depends on how hard it is to get into, how many gaps need sealing and whether old material has to come out first. At the estimate I write down what your attic needs, so you can see what you'd be paying for.

What is the best way to handle vermiculite insulation in my attic?

Leave it alone. The EPA advises treating vermiculite as possibly containing asbestos and not disturbing it, because moving it can release fibers. If you decide to have it removed, that work belongs to a trained, accredited asbestos abatement contractor that's separate from whoever assessed it, and we plan the attic work around that decision.

What has to be fixed in an attic before new insulation goes in?

Wet insulation from a roof leak, moldy or rotted rafters or joists, vents blowing moist air into the attic, too little ventilation and an attic that's hard to get into should all be fixed by a professional first. The same goes for knob and tube wiring, an early kind of house wiring that can be a fire hazard when it touches insulation. If I see any of these at the estimate, I write them down as the first step so the repair gets planned ahead of the insulation.

What license does an attic insulation contractor need in California?

California has a contractor class for this work, the C-2 insulation and acoustical class, which covers anyone installing insulation to control heat or sound. Attic insulation falls under it. I'm glad to answer licence questions when I come out.
